Jill Scott's mom Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on the 4th of April, 1972, located in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. The family was also dominated by her grandmother. She grew up as an only child. Scott was a student at an institution called the Philadelphia High School for Girls followed by Temple University after graduating. She took secondary school classes her time at Temple University while working on two other jobs. The hope was to become an English secondary school teacher. This dream was however put on hold when after 3 years of studying and working as an aide to teachers, she was kicked out of the college. When she began her professional career, doing live poetry shows She eventually joined forces with Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me, their joint song, was written by the duo. Her first public appearance was as an artiste at a Roots Show. Following that, she started working with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. She was also able to gain experience on stage as she performed in the Canada tour of the Broadway production Rent. She was signed by Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
